Muddle through somehow
Elizabeth looked out of the window and bit her lip. On horseback they might make it to the Jefferson farm before nightfall, but Mama said Old Man Jefferson was a scoundrel. By morning they’d be snowed in.
Billy padded into the room clutching his blanket.
“Mama still won’t wake up.”
“I told you to leave her be.”
“She ain’t woken in days,” he said pouting. “At least she quit coughing.”
Elizabeth blinked too late to catch the tear that rolled down her cheek. Billy held her hand.
“Don’t worry Betty,” he said. “She’ll wake tomorrow, you’ll see. Mama loves Christmas.”
