One Word

The tree braced against the wind, emitting a creak which sounded more like a shriek.

Pleeeaaaase.”

The sound startled me. It was so raw: full of pain and desperation.

I studied the tree: bark forever scarred by the initials of multiple lovesick teenagers, long since separated; one limb irreparably damaged by the careless placement of a camp fire; and now I was attempting to add the final insult.

I removed the noose from my neck and climbed down.

I met my best friend at my lowest point. He has only ever said one word to me.

It was enough.

Was it please yes or please no? We hear what we want and need to hear, particularly from those friends we imagine, as all writers know

Thanks Rochelle. I do love being a part of this group. I haven’t been able to be so active in terms of reading everybody’s stories recently due to a hectic work schedule but it always amazes me how the pictures you select each week can provoke such different responses. Personally I always try and stick to my gut reaction which can often be quite dark. Hopefully this story ended on a lighter note!
