One Word
The tree braced against the wind, emitting a creak which sounded more like a shriek.
“Pleeeaaaase.”
The sound startled me. It was so raw: full of pain and desperation.
I studied the tree: bark forever scarred by the initials of multiple lovesick teenagers, long since separated; one limb irreparably damaged by the careless placement of a camp fire; and now I was attempting to add the final insult.
I removed the noose from my neck and climbed down.
I met my best friend at my lowest point. He has only ever said one word to me.
It was enough.
