Hideaway

It was washed up, abandoned. Just like I had been so very long ago.

After seven years of isolation, one might think that the sight of a boat would stop me dead in my tracks. However I rushed out to rescue my prize from the retreating tide as if it was the most natural occurrence in the world.

My prayers had been answered, only five years too late. I was comfortable on my island: self-sufficient and happy. What need was there to return to ‘civilisation’ now?

I dragged the boat back to my hideaway. Wood was always a precious commodity.

    Dear Thom,

Intriguing story. Sounds like a bleak existence.

Ah.. I think that this capture the spirit of Crusoe… but we know that there might be other events that make an escape would be needed…

Thanks! Often castaway narratives seem so idyllic to me. I can never understand why they are so determined to get back to civilisation!

This castaway was either crazy or extremely content. It sounds like the latter. Well done.

Indeed! I’d have stayed, kept the boat for fishing and touring around my island. Great story.

He/She might well do that. They certainly have no inclination to leave any time soon! Thanks for reading and commenting.

excellently unexpected and shows the power of learning to cope and survive. suggestion – avoid clichés like “dead in my tracks.” you’re clearly creative enough to think of your own metaphors.

Well it’s a castaway narrative but it’s not about Robinson Crusoe. Crusoe was determined to leave his island. My character very much wants to stay. Thanks for reading.

Great story – love how the castaway decides to stay in his island home after all. A neat twist. Nicely done

Don’t burn your boat too quickly! Might change your mind.

My first thought was, oh, no! Second thought was that some people feel happiest as hermits. Great take on the prompt.

I have wondered on occasion whether being alone on an island would be as idyllic as it sounds. Lovely take on the prompt.
