Everything – Friday Fictioneers

Hello again! I’ve been in the midst of a creative drought recently. However, I’m back today with another Friday Fictioneers entry. The challenge is to write a 100-word story in response to a weekly photo prompt chosen by our host Rochelle Wisoff-Fields. Follow the link to her blog for more information. Thank you to all who take the time to read, like, or comment.

Everything

When a train enters a tunnel, everything changes: light; sound; pressure.

Everything.

As a passenger, you’re never sure how long this change will last.

It’s like depression.

I should know: I’ve been through some fucking tunnels on my journey. Still, it’s nearing its end.

I think about death a lot. Not morosely. I mean, we all start to die as soon as we’re born. Some of us simply get there a little quicker. Before it’s my turn, I want to be completely honest with someone, just once. That’s why I’m making this journey.

To see him,

And tell him,

Everything.

If the mind is opening outwards again then hopefully that’s a sign of healing.

I really like this glimpse into the character’s thoughts. His way of approaching life (and tunnels) makes me very curious about what “everything” might be about. And more important, how the other guy will react.

I’m guessing from the tone of her thoughts it will be a difficult conversation. Intriguing.

I really like this piece. The pacing, the thoughtful character development. I want to know about the tunnels in his past and the resolution when he emerges from the tunnel ahead.

    Dear Thom,

Great job of describing depression. As one who’s ridden through this tunnel to tell someone I can trust, I could relate well. I hope this isn’t true for you. Nice to see you back.

    Shalom,

    Rochelle

Thank you Rochelle. Sorry for the lateness of the reply! I’ve been there too, unfortunately. The good thing about tunnels is there’s usually a light at the end of them.

You described well the inner thoughts of someone almost to the end of their time in the dark, reaching toward the light at the end of the tunnel, and receiving perspective through it. A very thought-provoking piece. I want to know more, who and what.

Thank you so much Alicia. Sorry for the delay in replying – I’ve been away from the blog for a while. Your comment really meant a lot to me though.

You’ve described that tunnel of depression quite well. Coming out on the other side is no easy thing.

Excellently written. Understanding that the tunnel has an end is often times more difficult than doing what it will take to get there..

Depression like a tunnel, yes but the light is from they way you went in. Turn around.

There are many differing battles to face in life, tackling depression takes courage
