The Dragonfly

I sat before the fan, mesmerized. Entombed between the bars; back broken; wings flickering lifelessly in the breeze, was the body of a dragonfly. Its emerald coat, now faded and grey.

An earth-shattering crash shook me from my trance. I ran to the balcony. On the street, a crowd gathered around an unidentifiable shape. The air was dust, screams, and tears.

Later, Mother comforted me. She said it had been a terrible accident and that the lady was in heaven now, with the angels. I couldn’t tell her the real reason I was upset.

Nobody had cried for the dragonfly.

Probably because jillions of insects cash in every day. Imagine sobbing over the demise of an anthill one ant at a time.

That said, I love dragonflies. Nature’s helicopters.

Thanks for your comment. Your ant analogy is interesting. I wonder if there’s a superior species out there somewhere that might view us in a similar light!

There have been many science fiction stories written with just that premise.

Loss of life seen through a child’s eyes? Nicely done!

Pretty heavy stuff there Thom. Reminds me of Gibran philosophy.

Best that he didn’t. His mother would’ve laughed away. That said, he is a sensitive soul and should not change no matter what. We might need more like him in future.

What ambition! To compare the value of a human life with an insect life in a piece of 100 word flash fiction. You’ve certainly made me think!

I think this is beautiful. It reminds me of my Mum and Dad going mad because I used to get up to save the flies who got stuck to the flypaper when I was younger.

Thanks for your comment Lisa! Glad you enjoyed it. Perhaps we’re more empathetic towards insects as children. I was always terrified of spiders but I remember crying one time when I was seven because I accidentally killed one!

Perhaps the family of the dragonfly wept for him.

That was POWERFULLY told. Love the last line, and thought of the little dragonfly… Maybe it was the last dragonfly in existence,,, and oh, how we would weep to lose such beauty, wouldn’t we? Or, like you told, would we even care… Great write!

I just love that description of the dragonfly tapped behind the bars – just lovely. A very good story, Thom
