After the battle
The warriors were a hubbub of conversation. I tried to stay attentive but a full stomach and my first taste of ale were making me drowsy.
An old man seated alone conjured up shadow puppets that danced across the wall. I recognised most of them as the strange animals native to this place. My eyes grew leaden. The images morphed into memories of home: my sisters playing, Rufus chasing a squirrel, Mother’s bicycle. I tried to call out, to ask the stranger how he knew of these things, but sleep had me in its grip and refused to let go.
