If

The wound was massive. The boy applied pressure, but it would do no good.

“Master, you must repent your sins,” he said. “Quickly!”

“Peace,” the fallen man replied. “If heaven and hell exist, I’ll be judged for my actions accordingly. If not, my body will become food for lesser beings whilst my mind drifts away into nothingness, soon to be forgotten. I care not. I care not.”

The sun broke free long enough to illuminate the tears on the boy’s face. His master reached up a trembling hand to wipe them away.

I gripped the boy’s shoulder.

“We must go.”

I hope that boy can find his way to safety. It’s clear that he has no time to mourn his master’s death.

Death is the great unifier. The devout and non-believer alike will all share the same fate beyond that wall. A nice piece Thom.

Reads like a section lifted from a historical novel – is it from a longer piece, Thom? Nicely done 🙂

Thanks Lynn. It’s not from a longer piece but I think it could be! I’ll definitely be hanging on to it.
