Seat of power
Every year on the day of the winter solstice, my father would order that his throne be carried out onto the frozen expanse of Lake Konungr. There he would sit all day and night, in silent contemplation, whilst the rest of the kingdom enjoyed the midwinter celebrations.
“Why must you do it?” I would ask, sad to think of him missing the revelry.
“It is important to remember,” he’d reply, “that the seat of power stands on fragile foundations. The King must be forever aware of the cracks that exist beneath him, lest they open up and swallow him whole.”
