One Night Fall

“Just so we’re clear,” he said buttoning up his jeans, “this was a one-time thing. I’m not really looking for anything serious.”

“Sure,” I replied, heart sinking. “Whatever you say.”

I stood at my window and watched him leave. He didn’t look back.

As he stepped from the kerb, his foot slipped on the ice. I must have imagined hearing the snap of bone but there was no mistaking the screams that followed.

His caller I.D. flashed up on my phone. I ignored the call and went for a shower. He said he wasn’t looking for anything serious.

I can’t help but feel that she, or he, was a bit small-minded

Well now… I can’t say I blame her for not going to his rescue. He did say, after the fact, that they were done…

His words came back to bite him. Well done, Thom.

The pain caused by the fall reflects the pain created by his unpleasant words in such an intimate situation. A good example of nemesis, I think. He caused hurt to another person and experienced hurt in return. Hopefully, he’ll rethink his behaviour.
