Peine forte et dure

“It leads to hell,” they hiss accusingly. “It should have been burned after the execution.”

“It will serve as a warning to others but it must be painted gaily and surrounded by beauty, to keep the devil at bay.” My ominous tone appeases them, those superstitious fools who killed my love.

“Witch! Name your consorts!” they had demanded, lowering the door onto her naked body.

She refused to denounce me, even as they added the rocks which smothered her final breath.

Now she has a shrine.

Do not fear the door. It leads nowhere. Hell is here.

A very powerful piece. I love the way you convey the narrator’s anger and bitterness. It is so controlled but has an undertone of menace. Great writing!

I loved the idea that if you burn the door, you make it impossible to pass through. Superstitious fools indeed!
