Never go looking

Sara couldn’t sleep after the story, not with Grandmother’s sewing machine in the next room.

Was there magic in this old thing? She stepped forward to touch it, inadvertently placing her foot on the pedal. The needle bit down like a viper’s fang.

Her screams woke the neighbouring houses.

“I wanted to be Aurora,” she sobbed later. “I hoped a prince would come for me.”

“He will.” Grandmother soothed, planting kisses on her bandaged finger. “The path to true love is filled with painful moments. The secret is to never go looking for it. Let it find you.”

I still remember the scream my girlfriend made when the needle went through her nail… but I think it was me that fainted…
