It’s Friday Fictioneers time! Once again I’m posting on a Wednesday. Is that cheating? Everyone else was doing it Officer! The challenge is to write 100 words based on a weekly photo prompt chosen by our host Rochelle Wisoff-Fields. Check out her blog for more information by clicking here. Thank you in advance to all who take the time to read, like or comment.

Hope
My approach caused the bird to struggle harder. Sensing its panic I increased the speed of my climb, wincing as another barb bit deep into the palm of my hand. At the top of the fence I paused, thoughts of escape crowding my treacherous mind.
I untangled the bird and watched it soar away to freedom. Then, like a coward, I retreated to the world I knew.
The uneasy feeling of being watched returned. I took some comfort in its familiarity. Perhaps the whole thing had been nothing more than a setup. After all, it’s hope that hurts the most.
NB. My friend set me the challenge of writing something uplifting this week. I failed. I started with the best intentions (man climbs fence to rescue bird) but then ‘my treacherous mind’ took over and ‘like a coward, I retreated to the world I knew’. Sorry Kelly. Maybe next time…
