The Signs

“No! You don’t get to casually say, ‘Hey, we’re both single, maybe we should get together?’ That shouldn’t be the reason, not after the hours spent hearing about your ex; the endless words of affirmation; the rare moments of physical contact that made my heart leap; the times you didn’t notice I dressed up. No! Not because I don’t want to, but because you never saw the signs. I won’t be anybody’s consolation prize. I know my worth: I’m the hero of my story. Can you say the same?”

I didn’t know how to respond, so I watched him leave.

Evidently, he’s a bit of a drama queen. She’s well rid of him, I think

Ha! That’s certainly one way of looking at it! Thank you, Neil.

Keeping old relationships alive antagonise the formation of a new start. It also demeans the other partner. Yes, he should have walked away.

Oh, I love this. I had to re-read, when I realised the point of view was the hearer, not the speaker. Fantastic twist. Subtle.

I like the way you turned the point of view around at the end. He’s right though, it should be more than “hey, we’re both single.” Nice one!

    Dear Thomas,

A great take on the prompt and some biting truths about relationships.

When someone is keeping score like that from the very beginning, it can only go downhill from there. Good, evocative, storytelling, Thomas.
