It’s Friday Fictioneers time! The challenge is to write 100 words based on a weekly photo prompt chosen by our host Rochelle Wisoff-Fields. Check out her blog for more information by clicking here. Thank you and Merry Christmas to all who take the time to read, like or comment.

Sinkhole

“You open?”

He wasn’t a regular.

“It’s our last night. Closing on account of the sinkhole. Seating area’s cordoned off. I can offer you a stool at the counter.”

“You alone?”

“Manager’s in The Bahamas. Chef refused to come in. No hot food, sorry.”

“Coffee’s fine.”

They chatted as he drank. She fought to keep her voice steady and her eyes dry. Fifteen years: such a waste.

“You know,” he said, leaving, “when you’re sinking, you only really got one choice.”

On the counter lay five hundred-dollar bills and a note that read: Swim.
